First aftermarket product that we will touch and just eats away at me knowing that it is going on most Chrysler vehicles (if it’s not made in Mexico) and some Ford’s delivering to a certain dealership is Ziebart and you; the consumer, have to pay for without having an option to opt.
All About Ziebart
What is Ziebart? The package description is “Ziebart Tropical Vehicle Protection Package Includes: Rustproofing, Underbody Sound Deadener and Interior Fabric Protection.”
The Ziebart Pitch
An ISR (“Independent Sales Representative”) of AAFES Car Sales will most likely state,
Ziebart is rust protection, scotch guarding of your interior and military grade sound deadening. They will also spray the undercarriage of your vehicle to protect from road salt.
Ziebart is Standard on Your Vehicle!
Those are just vague specifics. If you want to know more about the product, ask for the pamphlet. They may not even provide that to you or even worse, tell you that all vehicles come standard from the factory with Ziebart applied.
Sounds great, already! I don’t even care if they didn’t give me the option to choose it. I want it already.
Check the Quality Before Purchasing
Well, all AAFES Car Sales show vehicles overseas have Ziebart applied to them at the port prior to delivery. Before you are either given the option to add Ziebart to your vehicle (as it’s automatically added to the quote), ensure to inspect the show cars. Take notice of the rust around the nuts and bolts and ask yourself,
is this really rust protection?
Follow Up Questions from AAFES Car Sales Agents
Then, follow up with the other small claims of scotch guarding and military sound deadening.
What if I spill something on my seat, since the rust protection doesn’t prevent against rust, will the scotch guard protect against my 7-11 slushy? or They claim it’s military grade sound deadening; that sounds cool, but if Ziebart can’t even hold up to the rust, how can it give me a quieter ride?
Why is Ziebart Cheaper?
Ziebart is $469, because The Exchange mandates that AAFES Car Sales prices must be below MSRP, you save $170.85 as the actual price of this product is $639.85.
How Much is Ziebart Really Worth?
Now, if an Independent Sales Representative gets a commission of $200 from selling it, the manager gets a cut for his agents selling it and the zone manager gets a cut for his teams selling it—how much is this product actually worth?
Just doing some rough figures of Ziebart and its cost of $469 with removing $300 for a total overall commission to Exchange New Car Sales. That leaves $169 that this product actually costs. Now ask yourself, do you really think a 3 day application process of rust protection, scotch guarding and MILITARY GRADE sound deadening can be this affordable for a company to take that big of a loss? Think again, because it can’t be worth what they say as it doesn’t work anyway. If you think it does after their pitch, test them on it and ask them if you could spill some coffee on the seats and see if it’s easily cleanable with paper towels.
Tricky Independent Sales Agents Distract You
When building your vehicle, if eligible for Ziebart, an automatic screen will pop up saying “Congratulations your vehicle is eligible for Ziebart!”—a “good” sales agent is quick enough with the mouse to click “continue” before you know what just happened. What just happened was $469 was added to your vehicle, bringing your below MSRP vehicle ~$450 higher.
Click That Minus Button and Save Me Money AAFES Car Sales!
Below is what Ziebart will look like on a quote when you’re in the process of building it up in their proprietary software, MilQuote II. Notice that everything on the left is what is on your vehicle and everything on the right is what you can add to your vehicle. Circled are Ziebart and the fantastic minus button. When an agent clicks this, he instantly saves you $469 (but loses out on a $200 commission and lets his team down) as the Ziebart package will go from the left to the right—but check your quote before proceeding to make the purchase as well (as if it matters, we’ll get into that much later).
Don’t Waste Your Money at ENCS by Purchasing Ziebart
If you’re convinced that Ziebart is absolutely necessary for your vehicle because the sales pitch was just that great or you feel sorry for the agent as he missed out on $200 (don’t worry about that though—he makes enough already) go ahead and buy it—it’s only 2 months’ worth of car payments to get, what else could you get for $469?
